The kids have been all excited to find out that a box turtle named Hot Sauce will be coming to Abbotts Creek while he continues to heal this winter. We are helping him through the NCSU Turtle Rescue Team program! I was able to pick him up today at NCSU and will be bringing him to school in about a week or so! Our students will be able to learn all about Hot Sauce and record in our Turtle Journal how he is doing and other observations. Stay Tuned for more turtle updates!
I can't believe that we have been in school for three weeks already! Time has flown by!
A BIG thank you to all the parents and students that brought in supply donations to science class, you guys ROCK! I hope your students have been telling you about our science adventures, but if not let me tell you, there has been some crazy stuff going on! The kids have been very receptive to our Science Class Rules, of course mine are slightly different then some of the other teachers! For instance, they absolutely thought it was hilarious that we have a "Nothing Goes In Your Mouth" rule. I got lots of chuckles when I told them this rule and how I never want to see them trying to eat worms. They also LOVED the "Nothing Is Gross" rule. I make sure they understand that nothing in science is gross, it may be sticky, slimy and dirty, but it is never gross, only awesome. The favorite rule by far of the kids' is the "Listen For The Secret Call". I have a secret call (which isn't very secret!) that they need to listen for. If they hear it in the classroom, they need to stop what they are doing and put their hands in their laps. If we are outside working and hear the call, they need to stop what they are doing and come directly to me. They have done great practicing this over the past several weeks! What else have we been up to? Oh you know, just the regular science class stuff...... like Science Magic Shows to help them understand Solids, Liquids & Gas. We had a Science Dance Party where they have to sing and dance to the Matter Chatter Song while giving examples of each state, oh and of course our Kindergartners' have been getting up close and personal touching dead Cicada's and their shed exoskelatons and acting out their life cycle! You know, typical science stuff ;-) We have more exciting stuff coming up this week and next with a life size Water Cycle Board Game with giant box dice. We are also starting to look at and record the weather, and learning how to "Talk Like A Scientist" when we break into to small groups! I have been posting LOTS of pictures to Mrs. Brinchek Science facebook page so please like if you haven't done so already! -See the facebook link on this page. I will also try to upload pictures to this website when I can. Please don't forget to participate in the "At Home Challenges" the students have LOVED becoming engineers and sharing their designs with their class. The class engineers have also asked great, thoughtful questions! September's At Home Challenge- What can you do with a paper plate? Questions? Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] |
