What a FANTASTIC couple of months! Have I told you parents how much I LOVE MY JOB teaching your children?
Ok, some important reminders to start off our blog entry! SCIENCE FAIR IS COMING UP- APRIL 13, 6-8PM! If you have a 2nd-5th grader who would like to participate PLEASE have them turn in a registration form ASAP! Once I get the form they will receive an information packet which will help them (and you) get going with everything! I didn't want my Kindergarten and First Grade friends feeling left out of Science Fair, so if they complete the March STEM At Home Challenge (see class work tab) and bring it into school to present I will hold onto their engineering design projects and DISPLAY THEM AT SCIENCE FAIR! Science Fair night will be an exciting night for your students! Even if your student does not do a project we encourage you still to come and support the ACE community! We will be having REAL Scientists & Engineers in the gymnasium with displays, and perhaps some live specimens to excite and expose children to the many different STEM Careers! Worried about how to fit in dinner that night? No prob, the PTA is working hard to secure a few different and awesome food trucks! Also I am working with the PTA on having a Science Raffle to help raise funding for an Explorer Backpack Program! Once completed these backpacks will be available for student's to "check out" on a Friday to encourage outdoor exploration with their families! What's in the raffle basket so far? Day passes to both the NC Aquarium (your choice which one) and the Museum of Life and Sciences!
What are you doing April 23rd from 9-11:30am? Come be part of the ACES Green Team and help clean up trash from the Falls Lake Trails off of Ravenridge Rd! The USACE has issued us a special permit to access their trail system for clean up! This is part of the State's Big Sweep program! We had GREAT success with our Fall event and cleaned up over 7 large bags full of trash, we want to see if we can beat that number for the spring! Please let me know you and your family are coming and get additional information about this event by signing up on signup genius! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080944abab22a20-abbotts I can't wait to see everyone there!
LIVE BIRD CAMERAS! The Great Horned Owl that has been incubating 2 eggs if finally a mommy! The owlets have hatched and the kids have been excited to check in on them every science class! If you would like to watch them at home, please go to the Cornell Live Webcam site at http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/ We are also keeping a close eye on the Barn Owls who we hope will be laying eggs soon!
Thanks to some wonderful families at ACE we have installed (3) Bluebird houses on campus! We are hoping to gain some residents this spring so that the students can be part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Nest Monitoring Program! This is an opportunity for the students to see eggs & baby birds up close. Please note, students should only be near the bird houses when they are with me! I am a trained Nest Monitor! Thanks!
Finally, I am extremely excited that Abbotts Creek has been accepted into the Shad in the Classroom program through the Natural Science Museum. We are the ONLY WCPSS Elementary School within this 27 school program! This program was initiated to help restore the American Shad population within NC. In mid April we will be receiving about 600 American Shad eggs that we will be hatching and releasing into the Neuse River. Fifth Grade students will be the leaders in this program, making sure the eggs are healthy, maintaining water quality and temperature within our recirculating tank. Fifth grade will begin coming to Science Special AFTER spring break. More info will be sent home soon! Other grades will also be part of this exciting program by learning about what we are doing, and occasionally helping out with monitoring our water quality!
Finally, please take a peek at all the pictures to see the other fun things that have been going on in Science! As always please reach out if you have any questions! mailto:[email protected]
